East Timor President Xanana Gusmao has confirmed that he will stand in the upcoming elections for the post of the country’s Prime Minister.

“I am ready for the post of the prime minister if people choose my party,” he said.

Gusmao, whose presidential term ends in May, will lead a new political party, the National Congress for Timorese Reconstruction (C-N-R-T), into the elections. Gusmao will only assume the leadership position after he steps down as East Timor’s president.

The new party’s name is a deliberate reference to the former non-partisan coalition formed which led East Timor to independence.
